Così comincia “Kill Your Idols”, vincitore nel 2004 del Tribeca Film Festival come miglior documentario. Il film ripercorre la storia della scena art-punk newyorkese dalla No Wave al post-punk, dimostrando quanto la vita di quelle storiche band fosse caotica come la loro musica. Il percorso si snoda in 30 anni di musica: dagli anni '70 dei Suicide, Teenage Jesus and the Jerks, Theoretical Girls, D.N.A. che inaugurano il genere, per poi proseguire con gli anni '80 dei Sonic Youth ed approdare al giorno d'oggi, dove la scena si mantiene vivacissima grazie a band come Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Liars, Gogol Bordello, Black Dice ecc.
Si alternano nel documentario esclusive interviste ai fondatori Lydia Lunch, Glenn Branca, Alan Vega ad interviste ai protagonisti delle nuove generazioni come gli Karen O, Foetus, Eugene Hutz ecc. Un raro resoconto che parte dai primi concerti delle storiche bands restituendo quell’atmosfera unica che rese New York la capitale mondiale dell’underground artistico a 360 gradi.
